Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds: Real Differences and Price

If you are shopping for an engagement ring, a pendant or a pair of studs, you will quickly meet one big question: lab-grown vs natural diamond. Both sparkle, both can be set in the same 14K gold designs, and both can carry a grading report. But they are not the same product, and the differences matter for your budget, your expectations and the story behind your piece. This guide explains, in plain language, what really separates the two, where the price gap comes from, how certification works, and how to decide which is right for you. At PESO, every piece is made to order in Jerusalem with CVD lab-grown diamonds, and centre stones over 1.00 ct come with an IGI certificate, so we will also explain why we chose that path.

What is a lab-grown diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It is made of carbon atoms arranged in the same cubic crystal structure as a diamond mined from the earth. The difference is where and how it formed: instead of growing over very long periods deep underground, it is grown above ground in a controlled environment over a matter of weeks.

There are two main growing methods:

  • CVD (chemical vapour deposition): a thin diamond "seed" plate is placed in a chamber filled with a carbon-rich gas. Energy breaks the gas apart, and carbon atoms settle onto the seed layer by layer, building up a diamond crystal. PESO works with CVD diamonds.
  • HPHT (high pressure, high temperature): carbon is exposed to intense pressure and heat that imitate the conditions deep in the earth, so a diamond crystal forms around a seed.

Once grown, a lab-grown diamond is cut and polished by the same methods used on mined diamonds. A round brilliant, an oval or a pear shape is cut to the same proportions whichever way the rough crystal came into being.

What is a natural diamond?

A natural diamond formed deep in the earth's mantle under extreme heat and pressure, and was carried towards the surface by volcanic activity. It is then mined, sorted, cut and polished. Natural diamonds are prized for their age and rarity, and that rarity, together with the cost of mining and a long supply chain, is a large part of their price.

Lab-grown vs natural: the real differences

Here is where the two are the same, and where they differ.

Chemistry and structure: the same

Both are crystallised carbon. They share the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), the same refractive index and the same ability to break light into fire and brilliance. A lab-grown diamond is not a simulant like cubic zirconia or moissanite. Those are different materials that only look like diamond.

Appearance: the same to the eye

A well-cut lab-grown diamond and a well-cut natural diamond of the same grade look the same to the naked eye and under a standard jeweller's loupe. What makes a stone beautiful is the quality of its cut, along with its colour and clarity, not its origin.

Durability: the same

Because they are the same material, lab-grown diamonds are just as suited to everyday wear. That is why they work so well in pieces that are worn daily, such as engagement rings, eternity rings and tennis bracelets.

Origin: different

This is the real distinction. A natural diamond's origin is geological; a lab-grown diamond's origin is a known production process. Gemmological laboratories can tell the two apart with specialised equipment, and a reputable grading report states clearly that a stone is laboratory-grown. You should always know exactly what you are buying.

Price: different

Lab-grown diamonds generally cost much less than natural diamonds of a similar size and grade. The next section explains why.

Why lab-grown diamonds cost less

The price gap between lab-grown and natural diamonds comes from supply, not from quality:

  • Production is repeatable. Diamonds can be grown to order instead of being found, so supply is not limited by what a mine yields.
  • The supply chain is shorter. There are no exploration, mining or long multi-step trading chains to pay for.
  • Rarity is priced differently. Much of a natural diamond's price reflects its scarcity and age. A lab-grown stone does not carry that premium.

In practice, many buyers use that difference in one of three ways: they choose a larger centre stone for the same budget, they move up to a better grade of colour or clarity, or they keep the same stone and put the savings towards the wedding, a honeymoon or a matching band. For example, a 1.04ct oval lab-grown diamond solitaire pendant lets you wear a substantial stone without the price of a natural diamond of the same size.

One honest point: lab-grown diamonds are not usually bought as a financial investment, and resale values for lab-grown stones are generally lower than for natural ones. Choose a lab-grown diamond because you love the piece and want to wear it, which is what fine jewellery is for.

Certification: why IGI matters

Whatever the origin, a diamond should come with an independent grading report. At PESO, centre stones over 1.00 ct come with an IGI certificate; ask us about smaller stones. IGI (the International Gemological Institute) is one of the most widely used laboratories for grading lab-grown diamonds. An IGI report records:

  • Carat weight, the stone's weight.
  • Colour, graded on a letter scale where D is colourless.
  • Clarity, which describes internal and surface characteristics.
  • Cut, including polish and symmetry.
  • Origin, stating that the stone is laboratory-grown, with the growth method where it is given.
  • A unique report number, which is often also laser-inscribed on the stone's girdle so the stone and report can be matched.

You can check a report number on the laboratory's own website. We will cover this step by step in our upcoming guide to reading an IGI certificate.

Which shapes and settings work best?

Every popular diamond shape is available as a lab-grown stone, so you can choose purely on style. In our collections you will find:

Browse every single-stone design across rings, pendants and earrings in our solitaire jewelry collection. Our pieces are made in 14K gold, and many designs are offered in yellow, white or rose gold.

Lab-grown or natural: how to decide

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. What matters most: size, grade or origin? If you want the most diamond for your budget, lab-grown is hard to beat. If geological rarity is central to you, natural is the choice.
  2. Is this for wearing or for investing? For a ring you will wear every day, the material performs the same. If resale value is a priority, natural diamonds tend to hold value better.
  3. Do you want full transparency? With an IGI-certified lab-grown diamond you know exactly what the stone is and where it came from.
  4. What design do you love? Start with the piece. The setting, the metal and the shape will shape how the ring feels on your hand far more than the stone's origin.

FAQ: lab-grown vs natural diamonds

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. They have the same chemical composition, crystal structure, hardness and optical properties as natural diamonds. They are not simulants such as cubic zirconia or moissanite.

Can you tell a lab-grown diamond from a natural one by eye?

No. They look the same to the naked eye and under a standard loupe. Laboratories use specialised equipment to identify origin, and the grading report states it.

Do lab-grown diamonds get cloudy or lose their sparkle?

No. A lab-grown diamond is as stable as a natural diamond. Like any diamond, it can pick up oils and dirt from daily wear, so clean it regularly with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush.

What does CVD mean?

CVD stands for chemical vapour deposition, a method in which carbon atoms from a gas are deposited layer by layer onto a diamond seed to grow a crystal. PESO uses CVD lab-grown diamonds.

Are PESO diamonds certified?

Stones over 1.00 ct come with an IGI certificate, and the IGI report records the carat weight, colour, clarity, cut and laboratory-grown origin of the stone.

Are lab-grown diamonds a good investment?

They are best bought for wearing and enjoying, not as an investment. Resale values for lab-grown diamonds are generally lower than for natural diamonds.

Can I customise a PESO design?

Yes. Pieces are made to order, and we welcome bespoke requests. Contact us at support@madebypeso.com or on +972 52-645-5471 to discuss your design.

Do you ship outside Israel?

Yes. PESO ships within Israel and worldwide.
